I have the privilege of having a grandfather for a hero. I am always amazed at the integrity of his character, his genuine love for others, and his tireless pursuit of Jesus. He has never failed to encourage me or give me good advice. He helped me financially while I was in college. I watched him take in and raise my cousins when they needed someone to take care of them. I learned how to be a man after God’s own heart by watching my grandfather. More than anything he has been the model of patience and character. He is the wisest and kindest man I think I have ever known.
If I were to ask you if you had a hero and who they were, I am sure it wouldn’t take you long to answer. I think we all have someone we really admire or look up to for one reason or another. I would say it is an essential need for us to have a role model, a hero, an example. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad role models out there with plenty of people wanting to be just like them. They don’t realize that they don’t get to choose who looks up to them. The only thing they can control is what kind of role model they are being.
At Strong Rock we are always on the look out for the very best staff we can find. We know that they are the most important part of camp. They are in the best position to be someone’s hero. We also know that many of you are in leadership positions at school, church, or on sports teams and you have begun to recognize your influence. You are starting to see that you are a role model for someone, too. This summer we will be adding a new element to our HERO program. HERO II has been developed specifically for campers entering the 11th grade, who are already leading in some capacity and have a interest in being a counselor someday. If this sounds like you, or a camper you know, then we would love for you to apply for this special program or encourage them to apply. Some of the best counselors over the years have been former campers.
I am looking forward to personally leading this group of young leaders and potential counselors. We hope those of you who are eligible will consider applying. It is going to be a blast!
