Preparing for Camp
Camper Conduct
At Strong Rock we understand the inquisitive and playful nature
children can have. At the same time they need some guidance and
supervision
in order to keep them safe and learning what is right. We also believe
that rules and guidelines for behavior can help insure that every
camper has equal opportunity to grow, learn, and enjoy their stay.
For this reason, the directors will reserve the right to terminate
any campers stay if the camper chooses to repeatedly break the rules
of conduct and hinder the purpose of camp. The use of weapons,
alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco in any form is strictly prohibited
while
at camp. We feel that, in violating this policy while at camp, the
camper has chosen to be sent home.
Healthcare
In addition to staff in every activity and cabin area trained
in First Aid and CPR, our well-stocked infirmary has a nurse on
duty
24 hours. Campers are required to have health insurance and a health
exam before camp begins. Local physicians and a regional hospital
are also available. It is our policy to notify parents in the event
of an accident or injury only in the event of an emergency or when
recommended by our health care staff. Should medical bills be incurred,
parents are fully responsible for payment.
Transportation
Pick up from and transportation to Hartsfield-Jackson airport
in Atlanta is available for a fee of $75 each way.
Homesickness
This may be your child’s first extended stay away from home.
It is also possible that it may be his or her first taste of homesickness.
It is normal, and is almost always conquered after the first few
days. There are some ways to both help prevent and prepare for
it.
- Encourage your child’s independence throughout the
year. Practice separations, such as sleepovers at a friend’s
house.
- Discuss what camp will be like before your child leaves.
At Strong Rock you are welcome to visit before camp begins. The
directors
will be happy to meet your child and show him or her around
so the setting
is as familiar as possible on opening day.
- Agree ahead of time on the no phone call policy. If your
child knows they will be allowed to write letters only, they
are more
likely to make up their minds to get on with the fun instead
of dwelling
on the possibility of talking to you.
- Leave a note or care package with the directors on the first
day to be delivered the next day.
- Pack a personal item from home, such as a stuffed animal.
It is not unusual to get a homesick letter from your camper.
However, if you do, homesickness has usually already passed by
the time
the letter is received. The directors at Strong Rock take the distress
of a child who is homesick to heart, and we will discuss candidly
with you our perspective of your child’s adjustment. Avoid
the temptation to take your child home early, and don’t
feel guilty about encouraging your child to stay. For many children,
camp is a first step toward independence and plays an important
role in their growth and development.
